Granta Backbone Network

28/07/2020

The Granta Backbone Network (GBN) is the University of Cambridge’s privately owned optical fibre network. Since 1992 the University has developed and run the GBN to deliver high speed network services to over 40 colleges, institutions and research bodies linked to the University.

It currently totals over 75km of duct network and is growing continually to meet the University’s needs.

Initially, the GBN was installed within University- and College-owned land, but in order to expand, more of the network now needs to be installed within the public highway, which is why Plant Protection needs to be considered. This is where LSBUD has been able to help.

GBN manager, Ritchie Carter, was pleased to be joining LSBUD’s membership, commenting “Joining LSBUD is a step in the right direction for me and the team. We’ll now be able to ensure the GBN has the necessary visibility to minimize the risk of network strikes, thus providing an extra level of protection for this key asset of the University’s estate.”

The LSBUD Helpdesk Team are available via email, telephone and online chat if you have any queries.
