Avoiding Damage to underground & overhead utility assets

17/04/2017

Introducing PAS 256: Buried assets – Capturing, recording, maintaining and sharing of location information and data – Code of Practice.

LinesearchbeforeUdig (LSBUD) is proud to have supported and been involved in the steering group for the development of the new PAS 256 code of practice.

PAS-256

Intended for use alongside PAS 128 (Specification for underground utility detection, verification and location) and HSG47 (Avoiding danger from underground services), PAS 256 sets out to improve the quality, accuracy and availability of asset data records.

LSBUD attended the launch event on 11 April 2017 at the Institution of Civil Engineers where Business Development Manager, Fionn Wardrop, commented:

“We are delighted to see PAS 256 published as we strongly believe that it reflects the everyday aspirations of our Members to provide asset data quickly and accurately in order to reduce the risk of asset strikes and enable more people to work safely. In addition, the wide array of LSBUD Users, ranging from contractors and ground workers to search companies and conveyancers, will benefit as the improvements in data accuracy and formats encouraged by PAS 256 begin to take effect”.

The central pillars on which this new guidance is founded are locational certainty and a standardised format for asset data that enable improved data accuracy, sharing, transfer and access.

LSBUD Members have long demonstrated that these are laudable goals which improve planning, design and on-site safety and our involvement in the PAS 256 working group reflects our Members’ on-going commitment to improving access to their data and, in turn, preventing the deaths, injuries and disruption caused by asset strikes.

About LSBUD

LinesearchbeforeUdig (LSBUD) is a free to use online search service that any individual (“User”) can use to check works against over 60 asset owners’ (“Members”) utility assets. These assets include hundreds of thousands of kilometres of underground and overhead pipes and cables in the electricity, gas, high pressure fuel, water and fibre optic networks. The LSBUD service processes over 1.75 million enquiries per annum- that’s more than one every 18 seconds. The service is designed to be used by anyone that needs to know where utility assets (pipes and cables) are in order to work safely. This includes:

  • Contractors
  • Excavators
  • Fencing installers
  • Groundworkers
  • Private Individuals
  • Farmers
  • Conveyancers

…and many more. Enquiries can be for simply checking what is there for future requirements or for immediate use, i.e. for an urgent excavation. Works can be of any scale from a highway scheme to simply replacing a garden fence.
