Reflecting on National Damage Prevention Day and the National Safe Digging Awards Evening 2026

LSBUD opened National Damage Prevention Day 2026 by setting the tone for a programme centred on progress, partnership and practical solutions. A keynote session from Dr Ashwin Mehta, Founder and CEO of Mehtadology, explored how artificial intelligence is shaping the future of safe digging. The session examined how technology can reduce risk, improve decision-making and help prevent utility strikes.

Technology and Innovation in Damage Prevention

Attendees then took part in a round-table discussion. The session explored how emerging technologies could support organisations across the utility and construction sectors. Participants shared ideas and considered practical applications within their own organisations. 

A further session from Eversheds Sutherland provided a legal and industry perspective. The discussion explored the challenges surrounding pipelines, buildovers and encroachments. It also highlighted preventative measures and the realities of enforcement and remediation when issues arise. 

The session considered the views of both landowners and asset owners. It reinforced the importance of clear communication, robust processes and early engagement when protecting critical infrastructure. 

Industry Collaboration and Knowledge Sharing

The afternoon moved to an interactive format. Attendees joined breakout sessions designed to encourage collaboration and knowledge sharing. 

Topics included Digging Up Britain, improvements to damage reporting through the USAG Strike Portal and the future of a more connected safe digging ecosystem. These sessions encouraged meaningful discussion and the sharing of experiences, challenges and solutions. 

One highlight was the charity penalty shootout. For every goal scored, LSBUD donated £10 to Prostate Cancer UK. The activity helped contribute to the overall fundraising total of £795.

Celebrating Safe Digging Excellence

Following a day of insight and collaboration, attention turned to the National Safe Digging Awards Evening. Guests enjoyed a reception and dinner before an awards presentation hosted by Colin Murray. 

The awards recognised achievement across several categories. These included Best Planning Process, Best Safe Working Campaign, Best Damage Reporting Process, Best Safe Digging Influencer and Safe Digging Hero. 

A sixth category, Best Innovation for Safe Digging, was introduced in memory of Stephan Parra. The award recognised forward-thinking approaches while honouring a lasting contribution to the industry. 

The awards celebrated dedication, innovation and commitment across the sector. They also showcased examples of best practice that can inspire others to improve safety performance.
